Founder

Jutta Vogel

Jutta Vogel established the Jutta Vogel Foundation in 2003 to preserve traditional ways of life and promote cultural exchange in the African deserts. She handed over the foundation to the University of Cologne in 2010 and retired from the foundation’s activities in 2013.

Michael Bollig
Management Board

Prof. Michael Bollig

Ethnologist with extensive field research in nomadic pastoralist communities in Kenya (Pokot) and Namibia (Himba). His thematic focus is on human-environment relations in Africa’s drylands and interdisciplinary cooperation on issues of environmental change and socio-economic development. He is also concerned with risk management in rural communities, forms of conflict management, local innovation and adaptation in the context of global change, and conservation conflicts and practices.

He is spokesperson for the project “Rewilding the Anthropocene” and co-founder of the Global South Studies Center (GSSC). From 2011 to 2015, he was Vice-Rector for International Affairs at the University of Cologne. He has been Managing Director of the Jutta Vogel Foundation since January 2010.

Edda Brandes
Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees

Dr. Edda Brandes

Ethnomusicologist with a focus on the preservation of endangered music and dance practices. She is president of the association “BENKADI Kultur Raum Afrika”(www.benkadi.org) with its own music label benkadi fòli series and vice president of the German National Committee of the ICTMD. Field research, teaching and cultural projects in China (music of minorities/Yunnan), Algeria (Kel Ahaggaren/Chaamba), Mali (doc. trad. music), Mauritania (Harratin), Ghana (Polyversal Souls Orchestra), Burundi (doc. trad. dances) and Germany (Berliner Klangbilder).

Ms. Brandes is Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Jutta Vogel Foundation.

meike mehrpohl
Board of Trustees

Dr. Meike Meerpohl

Ethnologist with various field research projects in Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Chad and Libya. Her research focuses on nomadism and pastoralism in desert regions, trans-Saharan routes and trade routes as well as national parks and the management of World Heritage Sites.
Employee of the Global South Studies Center (GSSC). 

Dr. Souleymane Diallo

Dr. Souleymane Diallo

Anthropologist with a research focus on: Islam in Africa, intra-religious conflict dynamics, anthropology of religion, political anthropology, anthropology of war, humanitarianism, gender studies, ethnomusicology, ethnology of youth, methods and methodology, theory and practice of visual anthropology.
He is currently researching the topic “Constructing religious authority and transnational Muslim community in the militarized border zone of Mali/ Niger”.

He is coordinator of the English-language Master’s program “Social Anthropology” and the Erasmus program at the Institute of Social Anthropology, University of Münster.
