Restitution of African archives: Development of a digital portal for Benin’s archive holdings

2025

The project deals with the restitution of colonial archives from Benin and at the same time develops the concept of a digital portal to systematically record, secure and make these collections accessible. The restitution of such archives is seen as an important step towards regaining cultural and historical identity. At the same time, it creates an important basis for scientific research and can contribute to the socio-economic development of the countries concerned.

Against the backdrop of colonial archive collections scattered around the world, the study examines the extent to which a digital, user-oriented portal can strategically support this restitution process. Based on quantitative and qualitative research methods and a human-centered design approach, the design, use and potential impact of the portal are analyzed. Finally, the paper discusses both theoretical and practical consequences and provides suggestions for further research.

Ulrich Espédit Soglo is an archivist and documentalist as well as an expert in digital humanities. He was educated at the University of Besançon in France and his research focuses on the restitution of colonial archives from Benin and the possibilities of digital technologies for the re-appropriation of African cultural heritage.
