This funded book project focuses on gold mining in Sudan. For centuries, gold has played a central role in Sudan’s history, economy, and society, and it continues to shape the country’s landscapes and way of life to this day. Nevertheless, there has yet to be a comprehensive historical study of the development of gold mining in the regions that make up present-day Sudan.
The two-volume book project *Gold Mining in Sudan* aims to fill this research gap and trace the history of gold mining from the 4th millennium B.C. to the present. Drawing on archaeological, historical, and interdisciplinary research, the project aims to examine the changing forms of resource extraction, imperial expansion, local forms of appropriation and resistance, as well as the social, economic, and environmental consequences of gold mining.
Volume 1 (Historiography) will provide a chronological, long-term perspective on the history and historiography of gold mining. Volume 2 (Cross-cutting Themes) will address cross-cutting themes such as mining technologies, labor relations, gender relations, knowledge production, legal systems, and political economy.
The project thus makes an important and lasting contribution to our understanding of the long-term dynamics of natural resource extraction and its impact on Sudanese societies.
