Gold plays a central role in Sudan’s history, economy, and society, and has had a lasting impact on the development of its landscapes and environments. Nevertheless, there has yet to be a comprehensive historical study of gold mining in the regions that make up present-day Sudan.
The planned two-volume book project *Gold Mining in Sudan* aims to fill this research gap and trace the history of gold mining from the 4th millennium B.C. to the present. It will examine the various forms of resource extraction, the role of imperial and local actors, and the reactions of the local population to the changes brought about by gold mining.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the social, economic, and environmental consequences of raw material extraction. The book project’s interdisciplinary approach will combine archaeological and historical perspectives and will also examine topics such as mining technologies, labor conditions, gender roles, knowledge production, and political economy.
