The book smugglers of Timbuktu

The book smugglers of Timbuktu – The search for the legendary city and the rescue of its treasure

From Charlie English

Timbuktu is a myth – once so rich that even the slaves allegedly wore gold jewelry, the remote city on the Niger has a very special treasure: one of the largest libraries of medieval writings. When the town fell into the hands of Islamists in 2012, the books were threatened with destruction. But a group of librarians and archivists smuggle the books out of the city at the risk of their lives. A great, masterful documentary about people who courageously oppose the destruction of a treasure trove of knowledge and the heritage of mankind – and a journey through time to a city shrouded in legend.
